Disaster planning is a difficult subject because it forces us to acknowledge our own mortality and the mortality of those close to us. It takes a brave person to make a will or pick out their own cemetery plot . Our attitude will change nothing about our eventual demise  We do not have to hurry the process along by foolish behavior however. Human nature deals well with immediate threats that arouse our fight or flight instincts. Human nature does not do well with long term infrequently occurring events. When is the last time you called an insurance person or did long range planning?To help you get started thinking about your own disaster planning I have listed some of the most common types of denial.

The ostrich believes if you do not acknowledge a threat it will go away . Classic head in the sand approach. Comment: You are not showing your best side. Result: High mortality.Procrastinators acknowledge the threat  with enthusiasm and assure everyone they are going to take action soon. Comment: Vanishing credibility Result: Game over. Fatalists seem to believe when your number is up, it is up. Comment: Ask to see the number. Result: You're outta here. Religious people say,God will save us. Comment: Somebody is going to be angry if a miracle does not occur. Variation: It was Gods will.Further variations include:  The husband, the boss, the wife, the authorities, the fire department, police, paper boy, somebody will save us.Comment: Yea right. Result: You're dead. Poor folks would do wonderful things if only they had the money, this includes poor people, businesses, organizations etc. Comment: They never will have the money because its such a low priority. Result: Death and destruction. Smug  folks have a jar of pickles and a box of band aids in the basement. Comment: Good start, do not stop now. Result: You know.

There is an additional consideration that I want to bring to your attention .We live in a litigious society and the laws are changing . What was once considered" an act of God "is increasingly being seen as an infrequently occurring but predictable event.That is to say the "act of god" defense is no longer a good defense. Example: You are in an area known to have earthquakes and you have not secured your computers and one lands on an employee.You and your company are liable. Simple common sense and good business practices dictate you do the right thing. See photo below.
